Best Consumer Level Camera + Accessories
WOW. Long time no blog. I've been terrible at keeping up with this end of my business this year, but it's something I plan to change in 2019! I can't believe it's almost Christmas and the year is just about over. One question I get from past clients and vendor friends a lot - especially this time of year - is what camera I would recommend for someone just wanting to take better photos of their day to day life, their kids, or products for their small businesses, so I thought I'd put together a little blog post for you to reference if you're someone in the market for a new camera (or someone that wants to gift one!) AND, I'm hosting a How to Use Your DSLR Workshop this January, so if you'd like to gift a crash course to their new camera as well, click HERE to buy a ticket!
This is the camera (or whatever the latest version is at the time) that I ALWAYS wholeheartedly recommend for entry/consumer level photography. The Canon Rebel t3i is actually what I used when I started photography 8 years ago and I used it for a few years before making the switch to professional level gear. I loved it, it's easy to use, and even the lenses I use on my professional camera can be used on this guy. It comes with a camera body, a standard 18-55mm kit lens, a camera strap, a battery and battery charger, and a lens cap. You can typically find it bundled with lots of other superfluous extras, but truthfully, they aren't very neccessary, so I tend to recommend keeping things simple (and way less overwhelming) by just buying the camera kit. If you would like to purchase a bundle with extra gear (for the same price as the camera kit!), click HERE, if you just want the camera - click the image below.
If you already have a camera, or if you're buying your first DSLR with the intentions of making your work stand out, THIS IS THE LENS YOU NEED. It's a relatively inexpensive little guy, but it's a workhorse. If you're unsure of all the technical camera jargon, "f1.8" means that your lens is able to give you a really shallow depth of field, which is what creates that nice blurred background effect, and it lets a lot more light into your camera. The lower that f number, the more blur you get and the more light your camera sensor gets. This guy will seriously be a game changer if you've been unhappy with your photography with the basic kit lens that came with your camera body. I can't recommend this piece of equipment enough. And, if you already have a Canon rebel body, even if it's an older model - this lens will still fit, and it'll fit if you ever upgrade your Rebel. As a rule of thumb, I typically recommend investing in lenses rather than upgrading your camera body if you're between one or the other.
This is the brand of SD cards I use for my own professional work and the brand I trust. The Extreme Pro line is faster than Sandisk's other lines, meaning it can record images quicker - which is ideal if you're planning on taking your camera to your kid's sporting events! 64 GB holds quite a bit of images as well, so you won't be changing cards as often.
You can never go wrong with having an extra charged battery in your camera bag. Nothing is worse than being at an event, ready to shoot, and having a dead or nearly dead battery at the start of the day. Save yourself the headache.
I LOVE this camera bag. It looks just like an oversized purse, but fits a camera, up to two or three lenses, and a small laptop or tablet. I love it when I travel because I can carry the gear I need without looking like a tacky tourist, ha! I get so many compliments on it, and it's way cuter than the boring bags you find at Best Buy ;) It's real leather that ages beautifully. For a waxed canvas version, click HERE.
So you have all this fancy new gear, but maybe it's all a little overwhelming or you're not sure where to start. I'm hosting a How to Use Your DSLR class on January 26th, and I'd love to walk you through the basics of photography and your camera, and introduce you to Manual Mode - it's really not as scary as it seems, but it's so important to be able to get images you love! If you're interested in signing up, or gifting it with a brand new camera, click HERE to buy your ticket!
